Influenced by Egyptian culture, the Greeks began creating stone statues around 700 before Christ. Mainly of young men and women.

In modern sculpture gardens, the statues are primarily concrete casts of these originals. All the statues feature a so called archaic smile- a vacant, unnatural facial expression.
